Former Sky Sports commentator Bryn Law slams the broadcaster for their coverage of Liverpool v Brentford on Sunday afternoon.
Arne Slot earned his first Premier League victory at Anfield with Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah getting on the scoresheet.
This was televised live on Sky Sports, but it seems for Bryn, these days working for LUTV and the BBC, he wasn’t happy with what he was seeing, taking aim against Sky.
He tweeted: “Sky’s coverage of this Liverpool v Brentford game is basically LFCTV – ex players as co-comm & studio guest, LFC associated presenter. Could they not have at least found an ex-Brentford player as a 2nd studio guest? The pretence of broadcaster’s neutrality a thing of the past?
“They should let ‘the little club’ do their own red button coverage then they could go full ‘big club’ with impunity.”
Nearly 6,000 Twitter users have liked his tweet at the time of writing.

They should let ‘the little club’ do their own red button coverage then they could go full ‘big club’ with impunity.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

For sure. Editorial neutrality loses out to commercial reality.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

Two of those three didn’t work there until after I’d left.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

Where do I mention ‘TV time’? Liverpool are on a lot, like Leeds and Wrexham (to a lesser degree), popular clubs with the viewing audience. That’s commercial reality.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 26, 2024

Sky broadcast to the UK and RoI. I’ve worked in broadcast sport for over 30 years. I’ve gained a little bit of sense of how it works. I’ll find you an ex-Brentford player or manager to do it in about 10 minutes.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

Stuart Dallas. Pontus Jansson. Adam Forshaw. Ollie Watkins. Mark Warburton etc etc
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

How many players or managers have you booked as co-comms for live games Tim? I think I might have the edge on you here…
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 26, 2024

Leeds? Very biased coverage. I should know…
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

It’s about the perception created that the focus is only on one of the two teams. If I watch Sky coverage of Leeds, I expect them to talk about the 2 clubs, the neutrals perspective, which is not what you’ll get on LUTV coverage.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

I agree. Kelly’s great. It’s a perception of the collective. And it may only be a perception btw.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

Studio guests don’t have to be doing the media rounds. Producers can go for someone with a reputation for speaking well. I’ve recommended players to producers in the past based on my encounters with them.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

I didn’t suggest that. It’s nothing to do with the individuals.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

Two of those three didn’t work there until after I’d left.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

I know Kelly, I’ve worked with Kelly, great presenter. Where’s the Brentford voice?
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

Seriously? My experience tells me ‘away from home’ has nothing to do with how pundits or co-comms are selected when it comes to neutral coverage.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

It’s not a Liverpool specific point, it’s about the way the coverage is created. Neutral coverage is meant to give equal weight to both sides.
— Bryn (@BrynLaw) August 25, 2024

But, without the rest, there is no league.

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold (Bradley 72), Konaté, van Dijk, Robertson; Szoboszlai, Gravenberch (Endo 90+1), Mac Allister; Salah, Jota (Núñez 72), Díaz (Gakpo 72)
Subs not used: Kelleher, Gomez, Elliott, Tsimikas, Quansah
Brentford: Flekken; Collins, Pinnock, Ajer; Roerslev, Janelt (Onyeka 73), Nørgaard, Jensen (Carvalho 66), Lewis-Potter (Damsgaard 66); Mbeumo, Wissa (Schade 73)
Subs not used: Valdimarsson, van den Berg, Mee, Yarmoliuk, Trevitt
Brentford head coach Thomas Frank: “It was a game of two halves. First half, I thought we were very good and it was very even – it was a good match actually,” said Frank.
“We pressed well, we defended well and we limited Liverpool; they basically had nothing besides their goal, which came from our corner.
“We were this close to the first contact and then lost the 50/50 on the edge of the box – we have to deal with those situations better.
“Second half, we were still in it – we had the Nathan Collins chance from the corner, which shows we are a constant threat – but then they score and then it’s very difficult.
“We lost fair and square, but the first half was our best half of football here at Anfield.”

Keane Lewis-Potter: “It’s a tough one to take.
“We spoke about the need to stop their transitions, and the first goal was a transition from our corner.
“But we caused them a few problems, particularly during the first half on set-pieces. In the second half, Nathan [Collins] had a header that could have changed the game completely.
“The positives are there from the first half. We defended well and we did have chances.”
Liverpool boss Arne Slot to Sky Sports: “If I’m honest, I think most players are quite used to what we want. But then it has a lot to do with us doing not so many things different to what Jurgen did in the past.
“So there are only slight changes maybe but most of it is the same. So if we lose the ball, how aggressive we are, how hard we run back because they don’t want to concede.
“But some details are a bit different but it also has to do with the opponent you face. Ipswich and Brentford made it quite difficult for us but I’m not expecting them in the top six this season. So we have a lot to prove against the teams that can finish in the top six.
“Our defensive performance today was really good. The only two small chances, one of them was big, were out of a set-piece. We controlled the counter attacks, we controlled them in their build-up. Apart from that, we created many good chances in the second half.
“I think Liverpool fans saw these performances under Jurgen many, many, many times. But what I mean with control is when we concede the counter-attack, we see everyone sprinting back trying everything which they can not to concede. That’s what happened really well today, apart from one or two set-pieces.
“In the end, you could see Brentford didn’t have the legs to defend against us, that’s because of what we did in the first half.”

Here’s how fans had to say as the former Sky Sports commentator slams the broadcaster for their coverage of Liverpool v Brentford…
@davidmmc: Bet you fans of those clubs (predominantly the red mafia) haven’t even noticed…. Fortunately Sky isn’t the future of English football coverage and it can’t come soon enough
@MissingApples: I muted the sound from the kickoff.
@FPL_ElStatto: It’s been like this for years and not just on Sky. The Liverpool dominance with pundits goes back to Lawro and Hansen on BBC. Surely it’s not hard to get one from each team for the match you are showing?
@tinscognito__: Who is an ex Brentford player? Mike truk? They’re all working shifts probably , what with their much heralded “Brentford” career
@UnitedWhite: The worst part was the 5 minutes of Liverpool fans at the start of the game with total silence from the commentators.
@woodhousepark: Spot on. You missed the five minute rendition of YNWA before KO when every other premier league game in that time slot is adverts then straight to KO.
@kcb49: I always liked you Bryn, and you are not wrong. The problem is wider though. Sky Sports is a vehicle for peddling the top 6. MUFC have their ex players too. Frankly a tad nauseating all round. It won’t change any time soon though.
@BargeTours: Sky gave up “neutrality” years ago. Their intention is keep the fans of clubs with the most Sky subscribers happy. Balanced coverage isn’t in their financial interest.
@garthy1982: I’m a Liverpool fan and I fully agree. Ally McCoist on BT is just the best co-commentator by miles. However, Sky will have Gary Neville on next week for the Utd game.
@Discodutton1974: They seemed to forget there was a game on beforehand. Just focused on Liverpool. An interview with Slot 15 minutes before Bournemouth v Newcaste their 2.00pm ko
@jemccudden: Yeah pretty bad, but has been for last few years. They always seem to focus their commentary on what the ‘rich 6’ are doing.
@gleds169: I’ve never understood why there is this love fest in the media for them. Always the same
@Robbie_T7: Always the same with the ‘media 6’. Footballs just about gone.
@hornetman071162: Carragher on co-comms is the worst of it all. Neville never does United games with just Drury, he’s always got someone else there so why does Carragher get Liverpool games by himself?
