There was controversy on Sunday afternoon as Joelinton avoids a red card and Bournemouth’s late stoppage time winner gets disallowed.
It was a dramatic finish to the game at the Vitality Stadium, with Dango Ouattara experienced a dramatic conclusion as his stoppage-time goal was disallowed, resulting in Bournemouth settling for a draw against Newcastle.
The substitute thought he had sealed all three points for his side, with a goal in the 93rd minute, only for it to be overturned due to a handball infraction.
Bournemouth had taken a well-deserved lead in the first half, with thanks to Marcus Tavernier, who converted from Antoine Semenyo’s cross.
Newcastle struggled for much of the match, improved in the final moments, and while Neto denied Joelinton’s header, Gordon levelled the scoreline by tapping in Harvey Barnes’ cross at the far post on 76 minutes.
Semenyo came close with a deflected shot, and Dan Burn’s header was expertly saved by Neto, but it was in stoppage time when Ouattara’s goal was disallowed.
Premier League Match Centre tweeted: “#BOUNEW – 90+3’ VAR OVERTURN – Ouattara’s goal is awarded on-field. The VAR overturned the decision as they deemed it to be a factual handball by Ouattara, therefore an on-field review was not required and the goal was disallowed.”
Alan Shearer tweeted: “A lucky point as that’s an awful decision re hand ball. Never hand ball for me. #BOUNEW”

“I feel the managers pain.” 😬
Jamie Redknapp reflects on Bournemouth’s disallowed goal against Newcastle ❌ pic.twitter.com/Y1daI3fMVr

Jamie Redknapp on Sky Sports: “I don’t think it does [hit Ouattara’s arm]… I don’t think it’s conclusive enough. I can feel the manager’s pain. It looks more like shoulder to me.
“There isn’t anything that’s conclusive. There’s still a grey area between the arm and the shoulder. They say it’s about where the shirt sleeve ends. It looks more like shoulder to me.
“None of the Newcastle players complained and I just don’t think it warranted that intervention. It hits him high up on the shoulder. It’s a really disappointing one for them. It feels more shoulder than arm.”

Izzy Christiansen on Sky Sports: “I think it’s the shoulder. I think that goal should stand. You can see from the leap he gets himself into an excellent position and I don’t think with that momentum you can generate that power off his arm. I think that should have stood.”
Bournemouth goalscorer Marcus Tavernier: “We have to be careful what we say but there is a decision that I thought was a goal and we have to stand by it and I think we can be pleased with the performance today.
“I feel like the first half we were definitely on top. When they got the goal we responded well and created that chance to get the goal and three points but it wasn’t meant to be.”
On his goal: “I want to try and score as many goals as I can. Now Dom [Solanke] has left, it is up to us to score more goals and that is what we are trying to do.”
On new signing Evanilson: “I think he is technically very good and when the ball is around the box, his finishing is very good. We are expecting good things from him.”

Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon speaking to Sky Sports: “This place is really, really difficult. It is a really hard place to come so it was important that we maintained some consistency in that today.
“They are very good in the duels and second balls and we had to adapt to that in the second half.”
On his goal: “Harvey Barnes cuts in and delivers a lovely ball and you can get a lot of goals in a season getting to the back post and a draw is better than a loss.”
On the start to the season: “The past two games we have shown so much character. We are showing great signs but we have got to maintain it.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports: “We work on a lot of things. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. Harvey’s ball was great and it was great to see Anthony on it. At that point I thought we could go on and win.
“I think today we always knew would be a very difficult game. It is a difficult ground to play against so I think in terms of attitude and commitment, I think it is a good start to the season. We are frustrated with moments and we know we have to improve.”
On Joelinton’s late foul: “It was probably as bit reckless from Joelinton. You could see wghat he is trying to do – he’s trying to stop the keeper – but you can’t go near the head area. That’s something we will talk to him about.”
Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day about VAR ruling out Dango Ouattara’s late goal: “I thought the game was lost because I initially hadn’t seen anything wrong with the goal. We have had it both ways. We have had it for us and against us and we are very grateful for that moment because we have battled hard. What we had at that stage of the game was a valuable point. But I understand that it is a contentious decision.
“I think a draw was fair but Bournemouth may have a different perspective. They did cause us problems with their quick attacks and while I think we had more chances to score more than one, I think they would probably argue the same. With that, I think a draw was fair.
“In that second half we were a threat from set played and crosses and we are frustrated that we haven’t scored more than one.”
Howe speaking to Sky Sports: “I thought we started the game really well and in the first 15 minutes were the better team and had control. Then we lost the control. With the substitutions we made, we improved and their goalkeeper made a number of good saves.
“We were passing the ball really well but Bournemouth are difficult to play against. Both teams gave everything to win and overall we are pleased with the point and pleased with the comeback.
“There were a lot of one v one duels and I think we lost control and then all suibsitutuions impacted really well. We are frustrated because there were more good chances for us but credit to Neto for some good saves.”

“We lost that control”

Barnes speaking to PLP about Dango Outtara’s late disallowed goal: “It’s a goal from a set-piece that we don’t want to be conceding. VAR is there for that reason and it has ruled it out and gave us a more positive result in the end.
“We want to be winning every game if we can. Maybe a point isn’t a bad result but we want to be going everywhere and getting three points.
“We were behind in the game so we needed to do something. I thought we [ the substitutes] did that well today.”
Fans gave their reaction amid controversy as Joelinton avoids red card and Bournemouth’s late winner gets disallowed…
@Itzstuie1: Unlucky, that wasn’t a handball in my opinion but VAR is a shambles.
@michael_adams48: ref a wanker for not giving a red to joelinton
@emmawooddx: Var is the biggest joke of them all, and that pull on Neto?? Straight red and won’t hear otherwise
@JackSimmons101: How on earth did Joelinton get away with that?
@bobbi_walker: Unlucky Bournemouth. I will never know how JoeLinton didn’t see a red card and the disallowed goal was a shocker. I can’t lie, I really happy with the point. Best of luck this season. 👍⚽️👍⚽️
@CameronAFCB:FT Thoughts 🍒We were far better in the first half should’ve capitalised more ⚽️After subs in 2nd half Newcastle were much betterTo his credit Neto kept us in it 🧤VAR for me incorrect twice 🤬1. Dango goal should’ve stood (shoulder)2. How Joelinton only got a yellow?!?
@StokeyyG2: VAR have absolutely embarrassed themselves there. The fact a member of Bournemouth’s coaching staff is only man to walk down the tunnel whilst Joelinton stays on the the pitch is shocking.
@FansAgainstVAR_: They check every single goal for a reason to disallow it, fans need to stop accepting this in the stadiums. Killed football stone dead. #AFCB #fuckvar
@ComingHomeNCL: Unlucky guys. We didn’t deserve anything out of that game. We got very lucky with that dodgy VAR call. Look forward to seeing you in Newcastle later in the season 🤝⚫⚪
@joshtubz: You were robbed, Newcastle get a a lot of benefit of the doubt with these refs and VAR these days, funny that since their takeover.
@VivaLaMartial: Absolutely robbed, you should’ve won that game 2-1 if it wasn’t for rubbish refereeing
@SnashCFC10: Horrific call. This is the opposite of what VAR is supposed to be for.
@GingerPirlo_: I don’t know what my immediate feelings are at this moment in time. Still giggling at Joelinton clothesline from hell mind 🤣
@Nusc2023: Credit to Howe for the positive substitutions. Rode our luck at times but we’ll take the point. 🤝
@NUFCMurph: Back to back shambolic performances masked by scraping goals. Back the manager and give him some players guys
@BlockchainCJ: Scammed a point 🤝
@ScottGShore: For the first time ever – really questioning Howe. What message are you giving the players when our intensity gets us back into the game, then we instantly take the foot off the gas to be more compact. We had them on the ropes and we’ve settled it down. Gareth Southgate 2.0
