Brest’s Penders Proves Heroic in Thrilling 2-2 Draw Against Strasbourg

F Football Insider Editorial 2 min read

Brest and Strasbourg clashed in a highly entertaining 2-2 draw at Stade Francis-Le Blé in Brittany on Wednesday night, with the visitors’ goalkeeper, Matz Sels, forced to watch from the bench due to a red card in the first half.

In a remarkable display of goalkeeping, Brest’s Jules Penders made several crucial saves to deny Strasbourg a winner, including a stunning stop from a Karim Zedadka effort in the 88th minute.

Key Moments

Brest took the lead in the 21st minute through a header from Jean-Kévin Augustin, but Strasbourg levelled just five minutes later through a well-placed shot from Adrien Thomasson.

The visitors then took the lead in the 67th minute through a penalty converted by Mads Pedersen, but Brest equalised in the 85th minute through a strike from Romain Faivre.

Reaction

Brest manager Michel Der Zakarian praised Penders’ heroics, saying, “Jules made some incredible saves tonight, and he deserves all the credit for keeping us in the game.”

Strasbourg coach Julien Stéphane, on the other hand, was left frustrated by his team’s inability to hold onto the lead, saying, “We had chances to win the game, but we didn’t take them, and that’s what’s disappointing.”

What it Means

The draw sees Brest move up to 12th place in the Ligue 1 table, while Strasbourg slip to 10th.

With the top four places still up for grabs, Brest will look to build on this result in their next match against Lille on May 20.
