Two police officers have been left seriously injured and 14 people arrested after a disorder broke out in Glasgow’s city centre as thousands of Celtic fans gathered to celebrate the team’s fifth successive Scottish Premiership title.
According to AS, the chaos erupted as riot police were deployed to clear the streets, with fans spilling onto the roads and causing congestion in the area.
Key moments
The celebrations turned violent when fans clashed with police, resulting in 14 arrests and two officers being taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The incident occurred after Celtic secured their fifth successive Scottish Premiership title with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen at Celtic Park on Saturday.
Celtic’s fans had been celebrating the title win earlier in the day, with thousands gathering in the city centre to sing and dance in the streets.
Reaction
The Scottish Police Federation has condemned the violence, saying it was ‘unacceptable’ and ‘disappointing’ that fans had turned to violence to celebrate the title win.
‘It’s unacceptable that fans have resorted to violence to celebrate a title win,’ said the federation’s chair, Brian Docherty.
‘We understand that fans are passionate about their team, but there is no excuse for violence and disorder in the city centre.’
Up next
Celtic will look to cap off their title-winning season with a strong performance in the Scottish Cup final against Hearts on May 21.
